KANTŌ 関東

Kanto includes the capital of Japan, Tokyo, and is located in the east-central part of the main island.

The region, which was the heart of feudal power during the Kamakura and the Edo period, became the center of modern development. Within the large Tokyo area and especially in the Tokyo-Yokohama metropolitan area, Kanto is home to not only the Japanese government headquarters, but also the largest group of cultural institutions and universities, the largest population and a large industrial area.

Tokyo is home to the Kodokan judo institute, the headquarters of the judo community.                  Ko means "in the lesson" or "to spread information", do means "the way" and kan means "a public building" or "room", on the whole, it can be roughly translated as "place for study" or "the promotion of the way". It was established by Jigoro Kano, the founder of Judo, in 1882.
